Welcome Letter From the Principal, Dr. Rita T. Bongarten

Parkwood Elementary School is a traditional K-5 school of 723 students and 91 faculty and staff.  Opened in 1966, it is located in Durham ’s Parkwood neighborhood near the Research Triangle Park and serves the surrounding community.  Parkwood is the feeder school for area students who opt not to attend the nearby year-round elementary schools.  Parkwood’s large campus houses five buildings and 9 mobile units, as well as playground areas, athletic fields, and a nature trail.

The demographics of Parkwood’s student population are:  49.2% African American, 18.9% Caucasian, 20.2% Hispanic, 7.2% Asian, 0.4% American Indian, 4.1% Multi-racial, 49.5% Free/Reduced Lunch, 17.9% LEP (Limited English Proficient), and 11.6% Students with Disabilities.

Parkwood is a very special place for LEARNING.  Parents, faculty and support staff, and the Parkwood community are doing “whatever it takes” towards the goal of student achievement.  Parkwood’s strengths include a diversified and highly-qualified teaching staff that provide differentiated research-based instruction.  Working collaboratively in a Professional Learning Community, we embrace the premise that the fundamental purpose of school is to see to it that all students learn at high levels.

 Likewise, Parkwood parents and the community support our work by volunteering in classrooms, tutoring, fundraising, and providing programs for parents like Parents as Reading Partners, Literacy and Math Nights, and Showcase of Schools.
